I have always cared about women’s health issues. I’ve paid special attention to the effects of trends on health and knew intuitively that shape-wear was not a healthy choice for women. That knowledge shaped how bumbrella was created to address the slip issue - a modern, no-squeeze all day solution that gave women the confidence and comfort they needed.
Many women swear by the shaping garments in their lingerie drawers. But could those innocuous lingerie items actually be leaving wearers worse for the (shape)wear? We’ve seen a lot of buzz on the subject, especially from the medical community, and the answer may surprise you.
“Just like with girdles and corsets we saw a lot of rib compression and lung problems back in the day, well shapewear is the new girdle, so now we’re actually starting to see side effects from that,” said Phillips. “In my practice, I’ve seen a bunch of nerve compression – that’s tingling and numbness going down the outer thigh or in the groin.” Source: Read Full article.
Tightness prevents healthy circulation which can worsen the appearance of varicose veins causing painful leg swelling. If flow is compromised over time, women are at risk for developing serious blot clots that can have significant health consequences.
“My advice is to avoid any kind of shapewear or just wear it for the least amount of time possible,” Avitzur said. “Think of corsets and Spanx like high heeled shoes—a pair of fantastic stilettos. Shape-wear compresses the abdomen, squeezing on the stomach. This causes stomach acid to back-flow into the esophagus resulting in significant reflux and heartburn. Severe, chronic cases can result in a state of constant inflammation which can ultimately lead to esophageal cancer. This is an extreme situation, but should not be discounted, especially if you are prone to heartburn.
